They're serving all the caramel apples you can eat with dinner at the Mount Vernon Campus. It's just one of those things that makes this time of year great. Mine was kind of fermented, but I just ate all of the caramel instead so no harm was done.

Usually I hate daylight savings time, but it does give me an extra hour to this weekend when I really need it.

So, I went out yesterday and took a long walk with some friends to the Georgetown cafe. I hadn't been out for a while, and it was nice to hang out with people who are interesting. I would have to say that the highlight of the evening was stopping at this great little hat shop. It had everything from ordinary fedoras to hats shaped like birthday cakes to old style bonnets; and everything was available to try on. I must say that my friend Aaron has one of those heads where he looks great in hats (I'm going to insist that he go back and buy that cute little sailor hat).

I'm not much of a hat person, but I did find a flapper hat that looked great. It had a price tag of $110, but that's not the scary part. The scary part is that I can afford that with the money I'm making now. And at the instant I realized that my little bubble of non-materialism burst into bits.

I've spent the past couple of months with little cash on hand and it hasn't done me any harm. I'd accepted that there was nothing that I really needed to buy, in fact I didn't want to buy anything either. But now that I have a job, I find myself waking up from my little cocoon of non-consumerism. I should just put all of my money in a bank and forget that it's there.

On Friday I finally talked to Bob. He's a homeless guy that I always see reading newspapers around campus. I offered him some ice cream and ended up talking to him about Buddhist philosophy. Actually he reminds me a lot of Kenko if you've ever read Essays in Idleness; Bob is someone who seems very much like he lives in his own world but he's actually very aware of everything around him. I bet he would do student's homework for them if they asked nice enough.

I’d known that there was someone who looked just like me walking around campus. But I’d never been mistaken for her until three days ago. The incident involving one of my look-alike’s friends did yield some interesting information even if it was slightly embarrassing. Apparently she talks with the same mannerisms I do. I’ve never seen her before, but I’m curious. How alike could I be to a perfect stranger?

Human memory is a selective thing. If you want to make a past decision seem like the right one you just remeber the good or bad. It's not exactly lies, but it's not the whole truth either, just a distortion. I find myself thinking nothing but dismal thoughts about something that happened a long time ago adn I realize that there was no way that it could have been that bad.

My mom came to visit me on Sunday. It was parent's weekend, but unfortunately I hadn't had more than 5 hours of sleep for each of the two previous nights. So, when the afternoon came I almost fell asleep on a bench in front of the Best Buy store in Pentagon City. But my mom was kind enough to buy me a few items that I'd sorely needed, though I felt guilty about her spending money on me. It's amazing how useful a stapler can be.

I only have to get through this week and everything will be okay. I spent last weekend talking to a Canadian general and getting a grade for it. And now this week I have to catch up for two midterms. It's all rather exausting, but I know that if I can just get through Thursday I'll only have my art show to prepare for. [Crossing Fingers]

A week ago I was up early to go to the university of Delaware. Now I am up early for symposium at my own university. It's not like it really matters, I wake up early anyway. But some days I wish I had a choice about it.

Today I got the sweetest email message from my Grandmother. It said:

"allison que quieres por tu cumpleanos? cuando puedas me contestas love you very much tu abuela."

That's a good question. What do I want for my birthday? I don't even know.

Today I got a job, or a grant, or both. Actually, I think it's a job that is paid through a grant, or something. Anyway, the National Science Foundation will be giving me money in some strange way so that I may work on a project that involves developing software for fiber-optic networks. At least that's what my understanding of it is. As soon as I accepted the job I realized how far I was in over my head. I'd better learn UML and fast.

With mid-terms it's like being chased by a giant bolder. It's only a matter of time before you get squashed.

Last night I went to a taping of CNN's crossfire. Lots of bickering took place, but I of course expected that. The more I hear about election issues, the more it seems like each side is just trying to make the other side look bad. There will always be two versions of the facts, both of them distorted from what is really happening. It makes me sad, but I'm forced to see all by living in Wshington. On the other hand, I did send for my absentee ballot today. So I'm probably not completely dissillusioned.

Reading Glenn's diary, I realize how much I miss him. He is a very cool person who always had cool movies to watch. I hope he'll come down from Sendai and visit me in Osaka when I'm going to Kansai University.

Out of sheer laziness I have not updated the updates page (sheer irony, I guess), but that does not mean that I'm not working on my site. To see the lastest flash stuff that I've been working on, click here.

Oooh. I'm realizing how long ago my last update was. Constant computer science projects keep me tied to the computer, but not in the good way.
