Farm Trip

We spent part of this weekend visiting the town of Emlenton in Venango county. Friends have a farm there and raise turkeys and chickens.

When I pick up my chickens they feel light and I can usually feel their ribs. These chickens, however, feel solid and thick, like little meaty bowling balls.

They spend most of their time in the barn sitting around. Few of them took any interest in us.

The turkeys live on the second floor of the barn and display a little more personality.

They like keep watch out of their window. There were little turkey eyes constantly tracking our activities in the yard.

We collected eggs from the free-range laying flock and ripe blueberries from the bushes. These eggs are what inspired me to raise my own chickens. They taste so much better than store eggs and make the best poached eggs ever.

My friend David bought a defunct antique shop in downtown Emlenton. He's going to use the building as his residence, so he'll probably cut you a deal on all the junk left behind.

I'm kind of jealous. It's like he's living in a library.

Can't Talk...Resting

I took a few days off, here. I visited some people and just thought less for a little while.

To make up for this breach I have the ultimate elementary school photo:

This isn't some weird picture that I found somewhere in the depths of the internet, it's my brother-in-law! My husband my in-laws found this portrait while sifting through family photos for the wedding a few weeks ago. Mike must have been a weird kid.

There just so many questions to ask about this photo. Why is he crying? Where did that doll come from? And why is it nude? These are questions for the ages, my friends.

Hell Yeah, Berries!

I've been topping almost everything I eat with my berries. If I had a steak or a rotisserie chicken right now I would put berries on them.

Rice pudding + black raspberries + red raspberries = best snack ev-AH!

Six Months of Projects

I'm halfway through the year and halfway through my goal of trying to make something new every day until 2008 rolls around. I'm short about 12 projects right now, which means that I've missed making something about once every two weeks. I think I'll try to make up for any shortfalls by extending this into 2010.

I've done pretty well at almost completely curbing my clothing buying and I've only broken down and purchased one dress so far. Otherwise, almost everything I wear has come from my sewing machine.

Since January 1st I've made...

It is getting tougher to come up with ideas, especially for days when I'm pressed for time. However, it is unlikely that I'll run out of recipes any time soon, so there might be a slight shift to more food related postings. Still, I do reserve the right to glue googly eyes to something and call it a project.

Cheers to the next half of the year! (Oh, that reminds me,I haven't written any entries on adult beverages. There's a rich vein to mine!)

New Year, New Resolution

Last year, I made a resolution not to buy any clothes that I could make myself. Therefore, instead of buying any new skirts, dresses, or button-up shirts, I cut my own out and stitched them together while sitting on the floor and watching trashy TV. The idea was to improve my sewing and tailoring skills while saving money. Though I started out slowly, I ended the year with about 40 new pieces of clothing, including 19 new dresses, and the 20th is cut out and sitting next to the suitcases that I haven't unpacked from Christmas yet.

So I would call 2008's resolution a success and I have been tempted to try something else to engage another skill that needs work. So, this year I'm going to try to write more, and focus on writing about what I know best: making things. I'll try to make something new every day, and if I need a break I'll write about things that I've made in the past. Still, the goal is to write a lot and try not to take too long doing it. I'm a slow writer and I need the practice at getting my thoughts together quickly.

Cheers to the new year!
